What Does a Yacht Mate/Engineer Do?

Modern yachts are intricate, sophisticated vessels that require advanced technical expertise to manage and maintain. A yacht engineer's main job is to guarantee that the boat's mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic systems operate properly. To ensure the safety and comfort of the crew and passengers, he is in charge of the systems' upkeep. If something acts up, he will have to repair and maintain it. Additionally, the yacht engineer needs to be able to identify and resolve any technical issues that can arise on board. His day-to-day duties cover several core areas:

  • Equipment maintenance: Engineers are responsible for servicing and repairing the main propulsion engines, generators, and auxiliary systems.
  • System monitoring: Keeping an eye on all vessel systems while at anchor or during a passage, including bilge levels, fuel systems, freshwater, and sewage treatment.
  • Electrical & electronic systems: Upkeep of all electrical equipment on board, including deck machinery, navigation systems, and entertainment systems.
  • Inventory & spare parts: Keeping track of inventory, finding out what's essential, and placing replacement orders.
  • Safety & watchkeeping: Ensuring adherence to all engineering safety protocols and participating in the safety management system of the yacht.
