Chief Steward/Stewardess (Senior/Head of Department)
Steward/Stewardess pay increases at each stage of the career ladder, and charter tip income adds a significant variable on top of every base salary listed below.
Charter tip income applies at every level on commercially operated yachts and is paid on top of base salary. At the junior and mid-level stages, tips supplement income, particularly during a busy charter season. At the Chief Stew level, tip income can add $1,000 to $3,000 per month, and many Chief Stews on private yachts also receive longevity bonuses and inclusion in the captain's performance bonus structure after multiple consecutive seasons. Accommodation and meals are usually inclusive.
Career Progression
The steward/stewardess career path is one of the clearest in the yachting industry. Most crew members move through three defined stages, each building directly on the skills and responsibilities of the one before it.
Stage 1: Junior/Sole Steward/Stewardess (Entry)
This is where almost every interior career begins. The role focuses on housekeeping, basic guest service, and laundry - simple tasks that build the foundation for everything that follows. You need no prior yacht experience. A background in hotels, restaurants, or any guest-facing hospitality role is the most common route in. Most crew spend one to two seasons at this level before moving up.
Stage 2: 2nd/3rd Steward/Stewardess (Mid-Level)
After proving reliability and developing core service skills, crew progress to 2nd or 3rd Stew. The scope expands to include formal table service, bar and cocktail work, and ownership of the laundry operation. This stage usually requires at least one full season of yacht experience, along with a Food Hygiene Level 2 certificate. Many crew also begin working toward a WSET Level 2 wine qualification at this stage, since it is increasingly expected even before reaching Chief Stew level.
Stage 3: Chief Steward/Stewardess (Head of Department)
Reaching Chief Stew requires 3-5 years of progressive interior experience, ideally across yachts of different sizes. At this level, the role shifts from hands-on service to department leadership. Your role focuses on managing the team, setting standards, and taking full ownership of the guest experience.
Experienced Chief Stews on larger vessels sometimes progress into the Purser role. Their role requires taking on financial administration and broader guest logistics. Others move toward Head of Housekeeping or Head of Service positions on the largest superyachts (60m+). Here, interior teams are large enough to support a dedicated split between housekeeping and service management.
Two certifications are mandatory at every level of the steward/stewardess career path, with additional requirements building as you progress.
